The University of Maryland is conveniently located near Washington D.C. and is accessible by may different modes of transportation. Whether by car, plane, or train, we have solutions to get you to campus safely and easily.

We encourage all visitors to navigate towards our Welcome Desk to receive a warm Terrapin welcome before visiting our campus. From there you can receive maps and information about our campus and our community. You can navigate to this facility by clicking here

All campus locations have a physical address that can conveniently guide you via any GPS enabled device. We recommend that you utilize this address when navigating to find the most favorable route from your location. Heading south on I-95 we recommend the following route:

  1. Take I-95 South to the Capital Beltway East (I-495)
  2. I-95 South will merge to the left, joining I-495
  3. Take Exit 23 "201 Kenilworth Avenue Bladensburg Greenbelt"
  4. Proceed south on 201 in the direction of "Greenbelt Road and Bladensburg"
  5. At second light, turn right onto Campus Drive
  6. Proceed approximately two miles to U.S. Route 1
  7. Turn left onto U.S. Route 1
  8. Follow signs to turn right into the Welcome Desk parking area

Metrorail from Washington D.C. 

  1. Take the Red Line train (toward Glenmont); transfer at the Fort Totten station to the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
  2. Or take the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
  3. The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the metrorail station. Shuttle-UM service between the College Park Station (Green line) and the center of campus is very frequent - every 8 minutes during peak hours on most weekdays - is offered year-round, and is open to everyone - no ID required.
  4. Get off the Shuttle-UM at the "M" (or second) stop for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Cross street and walk south toward Mitchell Building.

MARC from Baltimore (Inner Harbor)

  1. Take the Camden Line train (toward Washington, DC); get off at the College Park station.
  2. The University's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the Metrorail station. Shuttle-UM service between the College Park Station (Green line) and the center of campus is very frequent - every 8 minutes during peak hours on most weekdays - is offered year-round, and is open to everyone - no ID required.
  3. Get off the Shuttle-UM at the "M" (or second) stop for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Cross street and walk south toward Mitchell Building.

MARC from Baltimore (Penn Station/West Baltimore/BWI Airport)

  1. Take the Penn Line train (toward Washington, DC); get off at Union Station.
  2. Transfer to the Metrorail system.
  3. Take the Red Line train (toward Glenmont); transfer at the Fort Totten station to the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
  4. The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the Metrorail station. Amtrak to Washington D.C. (Union Station)

  1. Transfer to Metrorail system. Take the Red Line train (toward Glenmont); transfer at the Fort Totten station to the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
  2. Or take the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.

Amtrak to New Carrollton (MD)

  1. Transfer to Metrorail system, taking the Orange Line to the Green Line (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.

Shuttle-UM service between the College Park Station (Green line) and the center of campus is very frequent - every 8 minutes during peak hours on most weekdays - is offered year-round, and is open to everyone - no ID required.
  3. Get off the Shuttle-UM at the "M" (or second) stop for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Cross street and walk south toward Mitchell Building.

It is possible to get to College Park via public transportation from the airports although it does involve several changes along the way.

From BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)

  1. Find and follow signage to the MARC train system
  2. Take the Penn Line train (toward Washington, DC); get off at Union Station.
  3. Transfer to the Metrorail system.
  4. Take the Red Line train (toward Glenmont); transfer at the Fort Totten station to the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
  5. The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the Metrorail station. Shuttle-UM service between the College Park Station (Green line) and the center of campus is very frequent - every 8 minutes during peak hours on most weekdays - is offered year-round, and is open to everyone - no ID required.

From Reagan National Airport (DCA)

  1. Using Metro (map available at https://www.wmata.com/schedules/maps/upload/2022-System-Map.pdf):
    While the Yellow Line is reopening on Sunday, May 7, 2023, please note that the Yellow Line will operate between Huntington to Mt. Vernon Square only.
    To travel between Mt. Vernon Square and Greenbelt, please use the Green Line.
    Take the Yellow Line train from Reagan Airport station towards Greenbelt; transfer at the Mt. Vernon Square station to the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
  2. The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the metrorail station. Shuttle-UM service between the College Park Station (Green line) and the center of campus is very frequent - every 8 minutes during peak hours on most weekdays - is offered year-round, and is open to everyone - no ID required.

From Dulles International Airport (IAD)

  1. Using Metro (map available at https://www.wmata.com/schedules/maps/upload/2022-System-Map.pdf) take the Silver Line train from the Dulles Airport station towards Largo Town Center; transfer at the Gallery Place Chinatown station to the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
  2. The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the Metrorail station. Shuttle-UM service between the College Park Station (Green line) and the center of campus is very frequent - every 8 minutes during peak hours on most weekdays - is offered year-round, and is open to everyone - no ID required.
  3. Get off the Shuttle-UM at the "M" (or second) stop for the office of Undergraduate Admissions. Cross the street and walk south toward Mitchell Building.
